Ichiro Suzuki strode onto the field at the Tokyo Dome and steadied himself for his first performance in that legendary stadium since his retirement from Major League Baseball more than four years earlier. Here he was again, now 50 years old and in full uniform. On this night, one of the purest hitters in the history of the game was preparing to pitch. Suzuki steadied his small frame, peered over his glove and stared down his fearsome opponent in the batter’s box.

PHOENIX—Chris Young beamed as he stood in a puddle of beer in the Texas Rangers clubhouse in Arizona. “This game will always be about the players,” said Young, a statuesque former pitcher and the current general manager of the Rangers. “To see them realize their dreams, it just makes me so happy.”

PHOENIX—Chris Hanson paid about $600 to take his son, Cole, to Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday. But with the Diamondbacks down 10-0 in the third inning, he began considering alternate options. One presented itself just down the street: Victor Wembanyama. “We decided to go check it out,” Hanson said.

On Josh Jung’s first day in the big leagues last year, he noticed that Corey Seager was nowhere to be found. As the Texas Rangers took the field together that evening, Jung at third base and Seager at short, the rookie looked over at his star teammate and realized it was the first time he’d seen him all day. By that point, Seager would have been at the ballpark for six or seven hours. Yet as Jung learned, no one knows much about what he does. He hides, even in the corners of his ballpark undergoing a routine that’s as mysterious as it is meticulous.

PHOENIX—Before the 2021 season, the Texas Rangers arrived at a conclusion that two years later seems impossible to fathom: that Adolis García wasn’t one of the 40 best players in their organization. The Rangers needed a spot for a free-agent pitcher named Mike Foltynewicz. They made room by removing García from the roster, allowing any other team that wanted him to have him for nothing. García went unclaimed and returned to the Rangers as a minor-leaguer. He was weeks away from celebrating his 28th birthday, ancient for a rookie in an industry dominated by superstars in their early 20s.

Oct. 29, 2023 7:00 am ETARLINGTON, Texas—Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly was surprised to receive an email from his retirement-age pitching coach Brent Strom at about 4:30 p.m. last Christmas Eve. Subject line: “Some thoughts…”Kelly expected holiday greetings. He was wrong.

Major League Baseball fundamentally reshaped its rules this season in a drastic effort to improve the product on the field and attract younger generations of fans who had abandoned the sport. The changes largely worked: The once-controversial pitch timer resulted in shorter and more action-packed games. Limiting pitcher pickoff throws led to a record 41% increase in stolen bases. Attendances climbed to their largest total since 2017, reversing years of decline that started even before the pandemic disrupted the live entertainment market. Nearly two-thirds of teams saw their local television ratings rise.

PHILADELPHIA—The Arizona Diamondbacks are young and inexperienced. They won just 84 games during the regular season and barely made it to the playoffs. They are one of the few championship-contending teams that can sincerely spout the maxim, “No one believed in us.”Yet the Diamondbacks are heading for the World Series on the back of a playoff run that goes beyond disbelief. They have toppled big names—the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and now the Philadelphia Phillies—with a team of players that few have heard of, outside of Arizona.

PHILADELPHIA—Aaron Nola made his debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015 with the hope that he was the successor to Cole Hamels as the team’s next pitching ace. But his performance over nine seasons in the major leagues was often maddeningly inconsistent—when what the Phillies needed more than anything was an anchor of stability. This October, Nola, 30, is finally giving Phillies fans a glimpse at the guy they were hoping for all along. He has allowed just two runs over 18⅔ innings in three playoff starts this year, including a six-inning shutout against the Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series on Tuesday that gave the Phillies a 2-0 series lead.

The baseball world is ravenous for news of how Shohei Ohtani plans to deal with his torn elbow ligament, a decision which could alter the near-term future of the game. One person appears to be in no hurry to disclose what he will do: Ohtani himself.
Persons: Shohei, Ohtani
Shohei Ohtani took the mound on Wednesday for a seemingly meaningless start in the wind down of another fruitless Los Angeles Angels season. After he walked off, his future as the most valuable free agent of all time was complicated as the two-way superstar was diagnosed with an elbow ligament tear.
